Exporting/Importing Files & Backing up e-mail

What is the best way of backing up my e-mail? I have used
the export to .pst file in the past but now I am moving to
a new PC with a differnent version of office on it. when
I try to import my .pst file I get an error because of
compatability issues. Any suggestions????
