explorer occasionally hangs at startup

Perhaps once or twice per week, explorer hangs at bootup. None of the
startup programs will be started, and there's an hourglass. When I've
realized it's hung up, I ctl-alt-del and log off, explorer is not
responding, end task, then log on again.

Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices.
