Explorer.exe - Application error

When trying to open My Computer, Control Panel, or Printers and Faxes, I get
the following error:

explorer.exe - application error The instruction at 0x01001a40
referenced memory at 0x01001a40 The memory could not be written.

Click OK and it goes to 0x5ad71b25
Click OK and it goes to 0x75f81999
Click OK and it goes to 0x77a81541
Click OK and it goes to 0x76281513
Click OK and it goes to ox71ab1273
Click OK and it goes to normal screen

The OS is WindowsXP Pro with SP2. The OS came from a TechNet subscription DVD

I have tried the following actions to try to correct this:

1. Used the SFC / scannow utility - no luck
2. Did a windows repair from CD - worked for a while then came back after
loading programs
3. Did a fresh install - worked for a while but came back after reloading
programs
4. Ran 5 of the most popular spyware programs - no luck
5. Tried formatting the hard drive and installing windows from scratch -
came back after installing applications from original CDs also the computer
was not connected to the internet.
6. Tried replacing the memory module in the notebook (HP Pavillion zv6005)
with no luck

I desperately need the use of this computer.

Anybody got any more ideas to try, I'm fresh out

simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend and McAfee Anti Virus Command Line Scanners to
remove viruses, Trojans and various other malware.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode. This
way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor’s web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Exit the menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key

I have already run Adaware, Spybot, Spysweeper,and CWShredder but not in
safe mode.

So, this thing can survive a full disc format ?

I ran Multi_AV from normal and safe modes and the Spyware programs from both
modes with NO LUCK.

I failed to mention earlier that the computer runs everything fine from safe
mode.
I am also unable to open folders in normal mode which made me have to use
the run command to open Multi_AV.

Any more ideas to try??

Have you run MS antispyware. You are infected. When you have the issue that you are having you have viri\trojan.
Run some different online AV's and others

Since the machine runs fine in Safe Mode and you've determined the
computer is clean, something must be running in Regular Mode that is
producing the problem. I would use ShellExView (free) to disable any
third-party context menu extensions and if that doesn't solve it, do
clean-boot troubleshooting to determine what program or process is the
culprit.

This issue when posted by may in the IE groups usually means a infection. In a very small majority this problem was also solved by uninstalling the Adobe pdf reader. You can also try to remove the Adobe and if it helped then you can re-install it. By removing it then re-installing it would solve the issue if it is a 3rd part issue at your end.

The problem still persists after having everything in msconfig unchecked.

Also, Adobe was not loaded after the drive format and the problem is still
there.

I will give the ShellExView a try and report back

Finally got this puppy whipped. After recovering from several system crashes
with ShellExView and putting it aside and coming back with a fresh brain, the
problem turned out to be a glitch with Popup Washer by Webroot. Disabled it
and everything was fine once again.
