Excel Documents not opening from File/Shortcuts

Hi,

I have posed this question in another way before and it didnt seem to make
sense to people.

I have a PC running on Vista which runs Office Home and Student 2007.

I use spreadsheets quite frequently and on my old PC and Laptop had no
issues opening them by double clicking the file/shortcut. (Laptop Vista/PC XP
Office 2007 Installed) now when I try to open from a shortcut or by double
clicking within Windows Explorer the pointer acts as though it is busy for a
few seconds and nothing happens.

The files can be opened when I open Excel and then use the Open dialogue but
it is a lot more hassle and realistically when I paid so much for the system
I should be able to use my Shortcuts.

Can anyone give me any guidance please? I have been told various things, but
the options that I need never appear in the Tools as instructed.

I must be missing something fundamental and this is probably a stupid
question for some people but I am losing patience fast.

Thanks in anticipation

Nikki

Hi,

I suspect that this is a file association problem. 2007 file extentions are
4 or 5 characters xlsx, docx, accdb, and so on. When you double-click a file
with xls extension windows is looking to see what file type that is so it can
open the appropriate program. But is only knows the 2007 extensions and not
the 2003 ones.

1. In VISTA click the Start button, and type Control Panel into the Search box
2. When the control panel appears type file association into the Search box
at the top right of the window
3. Pick Default Programs
4. Choose Associate a file type or protocol with a program
5. After a while all the file extensions will be listed, find .xls and click
Change Program.
6. You will need to navigate to whereever you Excel.exe file is located and
select it - it is usually in C:\Program File\Microsoft Office\Office 12

First: Open Excel and select tools > options.
In the "General" Tab make sure "Ignore other applications" is unchecked.
Close Excel.

Second: Click on Start > Run and type the following including the quotation
marks:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Excel.exe" /unregserver
Click OK or hit enter.

Third: Click on Start > Run and type the following including the quotation
marks:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Excel.exe" /regserver
A Windows installer window will pop up and perform the necessary functions
to register Excel.

Double click on any .xls file and it should open normally. I did this on my
system and now it works as well as it always did.

Enjoy

P.S. Just make sure of where your Excel.exe file is located and change the
path accordingly.
