Excel Charts no longer update

Hey,

Recently a collegue of mine tried to update a powerpoint i made. The
powerpoint contains linked graphs. He got an error saying the source
was unavailable.

Since i updated the graphs for the past half year he turned to me. I
tried to do the exact same thing and on my computer it did work.

Both the excel file and the powerpoint are on a network disk.
I'm using Excel and Powerpoint XP (Dutch version).
He has an english version of Excel and Powerpoint 2003.
Links in both versions appear to have the same format but due to the
length of the links i'm not able to fully check.

Is there a solution, other then him copying all the graphs again?

Kind regards

Have there been any recent network changes? If the administrators moved it
to a new server, the link address could have changed. If that's the case,
I'm not sure that can be fixed without redoing the linked files.

The free demo of our FixLinks add-in will give you a more legible report on all
the links in your presentation. http://fixlinks.pptools.com

That will help you determine what the problem is.

The solution will depend on the problem. But I don't think you'll have to copy
all of the graphs again.

This should make the fix fairly quick and painless:

Search & Replace to change OLE link paths

Thanks for the reply:

The links still work if the files are opened from my computer. The
problem arrises when trying to update from another Pc.

Further testing seems to imply that the problem is due to a difference
in language. All English Office Versions fail to update the links, the
2 Dutch ones do not experience any problems at all.

Does anyone have any experience with this kind of problem and how to
solve it?

We have found the problem and fixed it:

The problem was that the excel links where copied in a Dutch MSOffice
version.
The graphs had standard names ("Grafiek 1", "Grafiek 2", ...)

When updating in an English MSOffice the graphs are renamed to "Chart
1", "Chart 2", ...
The links in PPT however are not translated, thus rendering the links
useless.

The solution we had was giving all graphs a custom name and recopying
the links.
