everything vanished

i have recently uninstalled norton internet security , all seemed to go well
until i was propmted to reboot , when windows booted back up i was prsented
with an unfamiliar desktop , all my icons missing and all programs gone from
the program list . However all the programs are still in add remove programs
and on the c drive.

all my pictures and music have gone i f i click start/all
programs/accessories all the resulting folders show as empty , system tools
,entertainment, communications ..... all empty?

if i access the programs on the c drive they will run from there ok?

i cant use sytem restore as its in system tools and its empty! all i did was
re boot it didnt even have time to format or do anything like that

if i use the search function to try and find any files/pictures it comes up
woth no results found

im completely baffled

one thing i can mention , after uninstalling norton as the pc was booting
before the desktop loaded it showed a box saying something like "setting up
IE6" or some such thing , it stayed on that for a few mins before booting
into windows with everything missing.

where has everything gone?

well....,
does sound like a mess.....

you likely still have
the registry hives intact

simply try to do a windows repair
installation....
