Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 1/25/2009
Time: 3:42:30 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: MARY-3GOK1LA99M
Description:
Windows saved user MARY-3GOK1LA99M\Mary Kay registry while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the
user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is
no longer in use. This is often caused by services running as a user account,
try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or
NetworkService account.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
The above link states: "1517, Userenv Event. This is often caused by
services running as a user account. Try configuring to run in the local
system account." I don't understand. I am the only one using this computer.
Why do I have to have a user account that opens on Restart in a Welcome
screen that I have to log on to? I am the Computer Administrator and there
is a Guest account open; however, in Safe Mode there is an Administrator and
the name I had to assign to a User account after I made the mistake of
reinstalling WIN XP Home Edition (and SP2 following) when I had intended to
do WIN XP Repair. Previously, I did not have to log on with the Welcome
window screen. My computer seems to be registered in my full name. During
reinstallation, the screen opened to name the computer with a name assigned
in blue background that I accepted although would have preferred to assign a
new one but don't know how that would affect operations. I don't recall how I
was forced into assigning a User account which I have now realized contains
my personal settings--but why couldn't I have my personal settings without a
User account with my assigned name? It's ever so confusing, but is there is a
way out of loging on to a Welcome screen such as appears in MS suggesting
configuring services to run in the local service or Network service (which I
do not understand and the difference) please explain how I do this. Thanks

"try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or
NetworkService account."
This solution is difficult for a user to achieve in practice and I for
one would not bother to try. The simpler solution follows.

Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Oh thanks, Gerry. I have downloaded the UPHC service and saved it to run
tomorrow since it is now the wee hours of the morning and thank you for your
prompt response. I also printed out *eleven* pgs of the Readme text to
follow, so have checked your response as "helpful" (so far) but may have some
follow-on questions.

Interesting though, the "Read and Rate" link in your response msg took me to
a blank page so I had to find my post and sign in there. And when I sign in I
get bar symbols while typing my sign-in information. Hmmmm.

And I wonder if the UPHC wil give me the privelege of not having to use my
User Account (Administrator) at a Welcome screen which I use to be able to do
before reinstalling WIN, XP Home Edition desktop (SP2, IE6)? Will let you
know after installing UPHC, but to bed now!

I sit here in trepidation awaiting your further advice having just
returned from taking two of my grandchildren to school.

Gerry, while *my* grandchildren were taking *their children" to the zoo, I
reinstalled hardware one-by-one and watched for the effect. After Restart I
got back to the desktop (which is where I wanted to be) without the User
logon page--until, I reinstalled HP Photosmart printer. So, before trying the
hive idea, I went into newsgroups for USB which (was way beyod my knowledge);
however, got an idea there to look at my devices--Photosmart USB and took a
chace of updating. Fear not any longer, Gerry--it worked! Device or driver,
whichever, was updated there and now after Restart, Welcome opens, then my
Desktop without having to log on as User! Although 82, I find some risks are
worth taking and I am still learning! Thanks in your interest in my
problem....Cheerio Grandpa!

Well, not yet. Forgot to tell you that hadn't installed HPDCleanup, so did
that and now it opens User Accts with a black screen and a cursor flashing.
What do I do with that? I thought running the program that it automatically
cleaned. All 11 pages of Read Me are too much for me to digest.

Are you saying the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service had this affect?
How does it resolve itself?

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?

Please look in the Event Viewer System log and post a copy of the
relevant Warning / Error report.

The latest problem most likely unconnected to installing the User
Profile Hive Cleanup Service

The small black screen with cursor flashing, waiting for a command to be
entered, was in the Hive Cleaner program and I didn't know what to enter. I
am reluctant to use Last Good Config since it deletes all my Sys Restore
points. Following are the two system errors, repeatedly on same day:
