Event ID - DHCP error

J

J Lunis

XP Home SR2
Network
PC connected to router by cable
cable modem connected to router by cable
NAS (Netgear) connected by cable.
laptop connected wirelessly

Event ID 1003 - 'Your computer was not able to renew its address from
the network (from the DHCP server) for the network card with the network
address xxxxxxxxxxxx.' 'The operation was canceled by the user.'

Been getting this for several months along with other errors (see
below). I have done some searching and found information linking this
to a bad cable (changed it out) or to a problem with the router with the
suggestion to cycle it down. Did that. Found a reference to a firewall
problem. Uninstalled Norton (life is good) and installed McAfee. FWIW,
most errors occur when no one is home so I do not see how the operation
could be 'canceled by user.'
Possibly relevant
Event ID 4 - Adapter Intel PRO/100 VE Network connection:adapter link down
Event ID 4356 - The COM+ Event System failed to create an instance of
the subscriber partition xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Event ID 8 - Failed auto update retrieval of third-party root list
sequence number
Win Explorer - on opening Explorer and selecting 'My computer,' I get an
hourglass for 2-3 minutes before Explorer 'finds' my drives. (Same thing
happens when I try to change folders in a 'Save As' display. Even then,
if I select a drive/folder in the left column - no problems. If I
select a drive folder from the right column, I get a command.com screen.
How do I resolve these?

What computer(s) are you getting these issues with? The desktop, the laptop
or both?

If both, then it does not sound like an XP issue to me, but rather a problem
with your router and perhaps your DHCP settings.

Almost entirely with the PC. Only Event ID errors on the laptop is
something about updating the time. Since the errors do not seem to be
preventing me from accessing the net or my laptop, it may not be
critical. But the red 'X's in Event Viewer do encourage me to
investigate as much as I can.
As far as the Explorer error is concerned, I have found Explorer oopens
quickly is Safe Mode but VERY slowly if I boot up normally. I suppose
this means the Explorer issue is not connected to the network? problems.
Seems to me there used to be a way to start up windows and selectively
load/skip drivers. Can't find how to do this on my PC.
How do I do that?
Do you think this would help resolve the Explorer problem?

Will you post full copies of the Error Reports for one boot in time
sequence so that
we can see what leads to the next error.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System and
Application logs for when the error occurs and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

I'm hoping you don't want all entries in Event Viewer. Would probably
take pages. I am only including the errors and warnings - no 'Information.'

Have you tried this.

To display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error that SCM encountered, at the command
prompt, type
sc query service name

The service name to be entered is WebClient.

Is the Windows SP2 update installed?

In your Services do you have a Webdav Client Redirector?
http://www.theeldergeek.com/webclient.htm

WebClient is dependent on that service so far as I can see.

Tried it. I get a quarter-of-a-second black (command.com) popup screen
- that's it. Tried the same 'sc query' with 4-5 other services. All
give me the quarter-of-a-second screen.
Is the Windows SP2 update installed?
Yup.
In your Services do you have a Webdav Client Redirector? Nope.
http://www.theeldergeek.com/webclient.htm
FWIW, since the eldergeek says webclient may not be needed, I went to
'Services' to 'Stop' it. Only choice I had was 'Start' so I presume it
was/is off. Clicked on 'Start' and got 'Could not start the WebClient
service on the local computer. Error 126: The specified module could
not be found.'
FWIW 2 - I found a reference to COM+ stating it could be reinstalled.
Went to Add\Remove Windows Components but can't find COM+.

All give me the quarter-of-a-second screen.

You have to click Start, Run, and type CMD. Then you type into this
window and it remains open so you can read the responses.

With regard to your DCOM / Windows Image Acquisition error what
is the make / model of your scanner?

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information

Tip: To copy select Report, Quick Report, Plain Text, highlight

Netgear SC101 - drivers? I'm presuming it is listed in Device Manager as
"ZNS Disk Device." Listed under 'Disk Drives' with drivers disk.sys,
iomdisk.sys, ZETsfd.sys. Listed under 'Processors' as 'ZNS proc' 4
times) with no drivers.

It will be recorded in Event Viewer.

Has there been any reduction in Errors. Which, if any, have ceased and
which are still arising?

My problem is you added this error to the thread. Don't know where you
got it. I haven't seen it on my PC.

errors - still troubleshooting. One error - 7026
'following boot-start or system-start drivers failed to load.'
3 are listed - fwdrv and khips appear to be Kerio drivers. Uninstalled
Kerio long ago but haven't found how to get these 2 to stop trying to
load. - zetsfd - associated with NetGear NAS. I have written NetGear for
guidance.
One error is assoicated with Removable Storage which is stopped so I
guess I know how to ersolve this if I want.
DCOM and COM+ related errors - I still am clueless. I have seen articles
telling me to uninstall/reinstall COM+ but I do not have that
component listed. Any ideas?
error - 00a024151983 seems to be associated with Windows backup.
Haven't found it yet and, to my knowledge, have never used it. Ideas?

-----
Happens on two occasions.
1) on start up
2) On opening Explorer - BUT not until I click on My Computer.
And, FWIW, remember when I click on My Computer, I have to wait 2-3
minutes for the C drive to appear (this is, obviously, when I have the 2
external USB drives and the NAS unplugged). However, with these drive
plugged in, I still get the error when I click on My Computer.
Hope this helps.

One more thing. Any msc files (e.g., services). When I try to run any
of them from START>RUN or from Explorer, I get 'Windows can not open
this file' and given options to chose the program that runs them.
