I've seen a few IDE hard drive enclosures available but they all seem to
be limited to the FAT32 file system. This limits the size of the drive and
files stored on the drive. An example is here...

Does anyone know of a reliable unit that will use NTFS and also offers an
FTP server?

You see that FAT32 limitation with USB2 drive enclosures. Check
out NAS with Google. I use a www.bufalotech.com "TeraStation" NAS
that has server capabilities. I use the "PCast" server that all their NAS
have in firmware to feed my "LinkTheater", with that I don't need to have
a PC up to serve media files to my media player. There is a setup option
to have the "TeraStation" function as a FTP server.

You might want to checkout http://snazzishop.com they have a similar
setup. Proadvantage sometimes has a good deal in this area.

FAT32 doesn't limit the size of the drive, only filesize.
Well there is a limit but it's approximately 8 terabytes.
The 4GB filesize limit is much more significant if you have
videos or other less common types.

As for reliable device that does what you want, I don't
know... I always use actively cooled mirrored arrays for
NAS-like jobs... but then I have plenty of spare parts to do
it.

How daring are you? A Kuro Box, either the "super variety" or the
original will do basically anything you want it to do if it can be done
in Linux. But even if you don't feel daring it comes equipped to do
Samba, netatalk, telnet, ftp, thttpd, perl and others from the maker. In
theory it is sold as a NAS device but because of the accessible Linux
core it is the darling of the small-box Linux hacker community.

Sittings in my computer is a Super Track IDE removable disk
enclosure, carrying a 200GB IDE hardisk ,with a 1GB FAT16,
a 32 GB FAT32 and all the rest is NTFS.
So it certainly works.

Thanks all... After seeing a few reviews I decided to snag a LinkSys NSLU2.
Linux based and allows for connection to two external USB 2.0 drives. There
are a number of hacks out there for it so I should be able to get it doing
all the functions (except ASP webserver) that I'm looking for.
