I appear to have a combination of problems that I feel are all inter-related.
1 cannot download macromedia flash player as explorer is not asking for
permission to download file or active x control.
2 cannot validate to download updates from microsoft as activeX does not
appear to be active on the system.
3 Tried alternate validation however It cannot access user accounts
4 Also cannot access user account in controll panel manually or through any
other means.This error is received.....
"wrong number of arguments or invalid property assignments" also cannot
access user account in safe mode.
5 system information cannot be accessed I receive the error information
(Internet explorer script error
an eror has occurred in the script on this page.line 60. char 3 . error
object required. code 0. hcp://system/sysinfo/msinfo.htm
Prior to this problem being noticed I had a virus detected by norton called
"Vundo trogen" see attached file
Following this detection norton appeared to become corrupt so I have
uninstalled norton and activated vet in zonelabs instead
I did a scan with vet which detected the virus again but reported to have
fixed the problem.

The system is a 2.8 Ghz pentium
packard bell
256 meg ram
xp home sp2
explorer 6

Thanking you in anticipation

When you get a virus infestation other pests often also climb aboard
through the open door.

When dealing with a persistent virus / trojan you need to delete system
restore points and not use them as they will contain the virus and put
it
back into your system. Turn off System Restore until cleaning is
finished. Also run your anti-virus with updated definitions in safe
mode. Sometimes you need to run an anti-virus from a floppy and Trend
offer one that can be used.

Create a new folder named Sysclean (e.g., C:\Program files\Sysclean, or
just a desktop folder).
Download Sysclean.com (http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp) and
place it in this folder.

Download the latest Controlled Pattern Release zip
(http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp, e.g., lpt123.zip) and
extract its contents to the same folder. See the Readme text file for
additional instructions.

Delete Temporary Internet Files (IE Tools>Internet Options>General)
accepting the option to delete all offline content. Reboot and delete
contents of all TEMP folders and then your Recycle Bin.

Close all running programs including your anti-virus application, go
offline, and run Sysclean. For best results, do nothing with the machine
until the scan completes.

If the scan shows any infections in System Restore files and you're
running WinXP, create a new Restore Point
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore), then delete
all but the most recent Restore Point (Start>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>Disk Cleanup>More options).

Work through the spyware removal programmes etc in turn in safe mode
until you get no results.

Afterwards, update your own anti-virus application and perform another
full system scan.

Finally run HijackThis and post the HijackThis log to the HijackThis
forum here:

You will need to register with Aumha to be able to post.

This seems to be the same problem I am having as well. But I have not had a
virus (at least my virus checker has not detected anything recently).

Hello question and poss answer.
Have you downloaded microsoft security update Kb896688 ?
if so try uninstalling this update.
Then reboot and see if the prob persists.
Ok good luck!

Thanks, sorry to be thick, but how can I tell? Normally I would have guessed
that I had, but one of the effects of this problem is that windows updates
are not working (because they rely on ActiveX). So the file may be on my PC
but not installed, is there some way of determining whether its actually
installed or not. Follow up question would then be how do I uninstall it (if
it is installed)?

Hello just goto start menu control pannel and sdd remove programs. then when
the screen is populated tick at the top "show updates"
if you have kb896688 it will probably be near the bottom of the list
downloaded in october select it and uninstall it and just ignore the
warnings about some programs
that may not work the pc should then reboot If your problems are the same as
decsribed your pc should be back to normal after a reboot
ok good luck!!!!!

Inhomepcservice, you're a star. Problem solved and much simpler than I
imagined it might be. Seems somewhat worrying that this MS update (Kb896688)
caused these problems. Question is I guess will the next update reintroduce
this problem, or will it correct it?

Thanks a lot.

1 Goto microsoft update site.
2 select custom instalation
3 After your system has been scanned for available find the Kb896688 update.
4 untick it and click on it and select hide this update.
