When I open "My documents" I get an the following error message. I
think it has to do with thumbnails (not sure) but this doesn't happen
when looking at other folders (i.e. My Pictures, My Music, etc).

The dialogue box states "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and
needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Error Signature includes
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: qedit.dll
ModVer: 6.5.2600.2180
Offset: 00064486

Suggestions?

I should add, after I close the error report, the only way I can access
any other window is thought control+alt+delete, to close windows
explorer.

Google qedit.dll. There's a ton of information on many possible problems
with the file to check.

yes I tried that. But the problem is there's so much information that
I need narrowing down.

Anyone else?

In Safe Mode try Start, Run, type "sfc /scannow" without quotes and hit
Enter.

Description of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 System
File Checker (Sfc.exe)

Can you find the corresponding error in Event Viewer and post a copy?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

What are your anti-spyware arrangements? Do you have a firewall?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry, and thank you.
I tried this but all that happens a DOS window appears for a split
second, then nothing. Shouldn't this prompt a scan?

To see what the error message was:

Click Start, Run, type CMD

In the DOS window, type:

sfc /scannow

When it aborts, you should get an error message.

thank you Joe,
I get "Window File Proetection could not initiate a scan of protected
system files.
The specific error code is 0x000006a [The RPC server is unavailable]"

I should ask, I always thought sfc /scannow was the same thing as error
checking (of the c drive). I'm now assuming I am wrong.

anyone?

Did you look to see if the RPC server was turned on? Do you have
permissions for the folders? Is there software blocking editing of the
folder? Maybe spyware? Just some thoughts.. not reason for any of
these to be related.

Thanks.
I don't even know what RPC is or how to check the things you mention.

I just want to be able to view "My Documents without it shutting the
window down.

For those that may encounter a similar issue it appears I resolved it.
I suspect the issue was caused by the creation of thumbnails (since it
happened in thumbnail view).
So to try and determine the offending file I moved files over to a new
directory. Ultimately I moved ALL the folders and files to a new
folder. And I noticed when viewing that in the new folder the issue
did not repeat.
So I then moved ALL the folders and files BACK to My documents, and you
know what? The problem is no longer happening. So I'm guess in the
process it recreated some hidden file somewhere-correcting the issue.
So thanks to those who gave input and good luck to those that may come
across this solution.
