Error When Inserting Rows

I have a rather large "telephone book" spreadsheet that we
store names, addresses, phone numbers, and miscellaneous
related information on. This file is on a shared drive
(LAN) and has been used for years by many people. Over the
time, it has steadly grown in size and now is in the 1.66
M range. It has several "buttons" to activate macros that
do functions like: Add Rows, Delete Rows, Search, Quit,
and a few other things.

The entire book is on one sheet (A1:G3644). All of a
sudden we began to get an error message and then Excel
would close. Error Message:

Instruction at "0x30192d25" referenced
memory "0x00000d18". The memory could not be "read".

Clicking "OK" terminates Excel. At first we thought that
maybe the file had been corrupted somehow but when we
loaded an earlier version from a tape back-up, we found
that the same thing was happening. It happens mostly, but
not always, when adding/deleting rows, using the buttons
or using Excel's insert or delete functions. It doesn't
happen all the time but when it does, there is no way to
recover from it and all changes are lost. Sometimes it
occurs on the first insert rows and othertimes it won't
happen until after many inserts. Deleting rows will
occasionally cause the same problem. It appears that
typing into a cell in a row that has been added delays the
error occurance but not always. This occurance is
happening on all machines that are using the file.

We are using Excel 97 SR-2. Can anybody HELP?
