error running windows update INNT\system32\advpack.dll

i am unable to run the following critical updates from the
windows update webpage.

Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1
(KB823353)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 Service
Pack 1 (KB832894)
Critical Update for ADODB.stream (KB870669)
Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components
(KB832483)
Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB819696)

when i download and run each one separately i get the
following error:

Error creating process C:\documents and
settings\user\local settings\temp\IXP000.tmp\IEupdate.exe
Q832894. Reason: INNT\system32\advpack.dll

i've looked on google and dogpile and both sites suggested
updating visual basic which i've done. i've also tried
with and without norton. i'm on windows 2000 professional
sp4, ie6 with sp1. the only thing i did not try was
system file checker. i have no trouble installing
anything else, just these critical updates. i can also
install other critical updates. i've scanned the pc for
adaware issues as well and i have none.

i know that the vb updates worked because i unpacked the
updates and made sure of the date on the advpack.dll
file. i tried with vp6sp3, vb6sp5 and a third vb6.0-
KB290887-x86.

any thoughts are appreciated.

What you don't mention, is your firewall? Do you really need
these updates? I don't, I haven't even one. (see also my reply
to David : "Live update and worms")

Only a very foolish person would suggest not keeping your operating system
up to date with Microsoft security updates, as they appear, which like virus
,*must* be kept current. Sooner or later you are going to get caught, if you
don't do it. Do you let your fire insurance policy lapse, just because you
haven't made a claim recently?

I would ignore Alan's reckless and rather ignorant advice, which is not only
unsupportable, but also contradicted by virtually every computer security
expert, I am aware of. I see no support for his bizarre suggestions. Can we
see some links Alan for your incredible advice?

The Microsoft security updates descriptions that I read in March/April of
this
year, also suggested a firewall as an alternative. I chose this alternative
and
since that period of time have not downloaded/installed any updates and am
running virus free. Installing a software firewall is not easy, if you've
never done
it before, as a considerable amount of tweaking is necessary - but the end
result is "incredible" - as my virus scanning software reveals.

What irks me about 'automatic updates' is that you have to run as Admin to
to install them online - and Microsoft, itself, tells you not to run your
computer
using the Admin account:

Start=>Help=>Security=>Security OverView=>
Related Topics=>Protecting against viruses and
trojan horses=>Related Topics=>Why you should
not run your computer as an administrator

Where it can be shown that that there is no problems relating to viruses,
the advice that you and others provide here is of merit.

Warm regards,
Alan

It may irk you, Alan, but advising people to do things, which are going to
hurt them is not only wrong, but malicious and all of the advice you have
given on this board fits that category and has helped no one. I am still
waiting for a link from you showing that users should ignore critical MS
security updates. Since you haven't posted it in reply, I will assume like
much of the rest of your advice, that you have made this up as well.
Firewalls, you must know, provide an additional layer of security. They do
not and MS never claims they replace critical security updates. To tell
people to ignore them is simply perverse.

You would probably be surprised at the number of personal emails I've
received, thanking me for my help from this and other ngs. I'm
planning to add a page to my webpage with further details.

In March/April the description of one of the security updates said
that "An alternative is a good firewall" but I can no longer find that
page. There is plenty of info on their site about firewalls, in fact,
if you order the free security update CD, it includes trial firewall
and antivirus software.

Lovely to hear from you again.
Warm regards,

The only emails you have received from people thanking you for your
misleading and misguided advice is likely to be the ones you sent to
yourself. I am still waiting for that link, supporting your claim that MS
told people not to install critical updates they just released, but as I
expected and like most of the other incompetent information you have
provided, you now have demonstrated it doesn't exist. Why am I not
surprised?

Once again the information you have provided on this newsgroup is worse than
useless. It is calculated to cause people harm. When anyone calls you on it,
you try to dodge providing a truthful answer and slink away.

Darling, now you're putting words in my mouth. Naughty naughty. What
I've said all along is that with sufficient protection from a firewall, I do
not
need the security updates from Microsoft - and considering the number
of reported problems in these newsgroups relating to installation of these
same updates - others can benefit from my experience. On a personal
note - I know we had a row darling, but that's no reason to start bad
mouthing me in public - you just have to get it out of your system - I'll
still be here for you.

Love and kisses,
Alan
