SUCCESS !!!

HOPE THIS HELPS SOME?

Had the same message - this is what I did:

1 - say a little prayer!!!!

2- close all apps running and shut down Norton Anti Virus
3- disconnect all usb (EXCEPT MY MOUSE)

4 -m download the stand alone 5 language SP1 version from Microsoft.com

5- boot with th Vista OS CD and do a repair
search for "How to automatically repair Windows Vista using the Start Up
Repair"

6 - run the downloaded SP1:

It goes thru the following (at least mine did)

Long time to load (green bar)
Installing Stage 1 of 3
Installing Stage 2 of 3
RESTARTS
Installing Stage 3 of 3
CONFIGURING UPDATES
THEN AGAIN:
Installing Stage 1 of 3
Installing Stage 2 of 3
RESTARTS
Installing Stage 3 of 3
RESTARTS
CONFIGURING UPDATES

Finally it starts up with the Vista Screen Saver - hit any key and logon.

Now re-connect all USB and re-start any programs.

I then found Office 2007 started a Configuration process.

Good Luck!!!

I couldn't find what this problem was about but it sounds a bit like mine.
Mine happened shortly AFTER the Service Pack 1 so that's what I thought mine
was. Mine was having problems with all my USB stuff and PS/2 trackballs in
my case. The pointer just disappeared and I could do nothing to find it or
reinstall it...the drivers wouldn't work at all. Finally I found a little
about what was going on from a WorldStart.com newsletter complaint from a
different user. The link is below. Also, when it happened again after the
next Microsoft update, I did a scan of my computer with Windows Defender,
and when I came back to my Vista Ultimate computer's screen....Praise be to
God, there it was....my PS/2 trackball's pointer! Yippeeeee! I have no clue
*HOW OR WHY* it happened, but there it was! That's what I'm here doing right
now...surfing these pages to find my How and Why answers. I hope this will
be of assistance to somebody anyway so all my lost and grayed hairs won't be
piling up below my chair in vain...lmbo. Good Luck to all.
