Hi,
We're currently trying to run the windows update on a Windows 2000 Server,
but keep getting the above error message.
We've checked the eventid but no solution, the anti virus software that we
are running is sophos and we have SQL server 2000 installed aswell.

I would be very greatful for any information to solve this problem.

Thank you very much....

The error 0x8007041D likely means "The service did not respond to the start or
control request in a timely fashion." ---> a service request timeout.

Make sure your Windows system clock has the correct / current / local TIME & date (month day & year).

See which *services* may have been turned off on this Win2000 Server.

Use Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log

Scroll down all the way. Get / copy / paste (ideally, put into a file & attach in reply back here) the set of lines for the last couple of sessions.

You need to review the log file to see if this error is in there. And if there is some indication of what was happening around this error. And if perhaps some other error also shows in the log .....before this error shows up.

If you are trying to use this server as the basis for windows SUS, then,
Be advised that WSUS issues should be posted to the newsgroup
microsoft.public.windows.server.update_services
