When I try to run certain CD's I get this message
windows system 32\config.nt.
this system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows
applications.
I've downloaded all the latest service packs and all the updates. is there
something else I can do to correct this problem?

Hello. Sounds like a pretty well known problem, you'll need to copy
config.nt from windows\repair to windows\system32 that *should* resolve it.

If it keeps on happening then something is probably deleting it when it
shouldn't be, give your machine a check over for spyware some free
applications:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
http://www.lavasoft.com/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Failing that you could also mark the file as read-only by right-clicking on
the newly copied file in system32 and going to properties and checking
read-only.

If you have any more weird issues don't hesitate to post back.

In addition to Paul's excellent advice, you can try this fix
