error message: \windows\system32\cp_850.nls not found

Hi Folks,

Got another interesting one.

Had a system bought to me running XP Home that just showed the infamous
windows\system32\config could not be found please insert the XP disk and
press 'R'.

So, I ran the normal system repair (boot from XP disk, press R, choose
directory and admin password if there was one, then typed chkdsk /r) and the
repair went through without a hitch.

When I re-started the system, it went right back to the same error so I then
rebooted off the disk and ran the second repair option when you go as if
setting up windows and then ask it to repair an existing installtion. The
ran through the first part ok until the first auto re-start. The it came up
with this error: \windows\system32\cp_850.nls cannot be found, please run
repair (which the system is doing as I type).

Any suggestions on how to get round this?

Thanks

I don't suppose that you have ran antivirus, anti-adware, anti-spyware from
a known clean bootable CD have you?

Hi,

Yep I had, and all was clean but, since then, I had to bite the bullet and
reformat the HD to get over the issue.

Thank you very much for your time and help but i have got it sorted out now.

Thanks
