Error Message: Windows Mail

I have a week old Dell laptop running Vista Home Premium. Set up my email
account and it worked perfectly for the first few days. Now every time I
try to connect I get an error message.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include.... Account:'pop.east.cox.net',
Server:'smtp.east.cox.net',Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket
error: 10083, Error # Ox800CCCOF

I have a factory installed Verizon wireless card that is working fine and is
connected. I can pick up or send my mail on my old desktop or by going to
my account from the Cox homepage, even from the laptop. I have been through
all the settings in Windows Mail and IE and can't find anything wrong. Any
suggestions?

Does your connection to that server cross over from one internet provider's
equipment to another's before it reaches the server, perhaps because
wireless connections often use a neighbor's internet connection instead of
your own? If so, such connections to port 25 are often blocked to cause
trouble for spammers, and connections through webmail don't use port 25.
Check your setup:

Using a Verizon aircard means that the laptop is using a different
ISP then the one owning the SMTP server (Cox). That is a no-no,
as explained here:
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

Talk to Verizon tech support and ask them for an SMTP server
assignment. Your only other options are:

1. Use Cox webmail.
2. Ask Cox if they have an SMTP server port other than '25'.
3. Get a free account with Gmail and use that server for sending.
Gmail uses port 465 which is not blocked.
