Error Message - Incoming Email Virus Checking

For the past three days I have been having trouble with some, but not all, of
my incoming email messages.

I have two error messages which seem to indicate that Outlook Connector has
been disabled or tampered with.

The messages are:

1. We could not check the message you are trying to open for viruses because
the virus check engine reported an error. To open the unchecked message,
click OK.


Do not check for viruses until the virus check engine is available.



2. We could not check this message for viruses. To wait until Outlook
Connector can check the attachments before opening the message click cancel.
To open the message now, click OK.

Any ideas?

I've been having the same problem. I can't seem to find any answers anywhere.

I have the same problem. I also noticed that there is a new mail catagory
(infected items) that I didn't create. The only suggestion so far is to
disable email scanning in my AV program. I haven't taken that step and hope
not to. This happened after the last MS Update April 1.

Scanning mail does not increase your level of safety. All it does is move the
detection point, often causing problems with mail traffic.

Brian, Thanks for the suggestion but it is of no use.

Unless you actually try the advice you're given, no suggestion will ever be of
use.

Gee, I'm sorry that I didn't make it clear that the suggestion you offered
failed to work. After uninstalling and reinstalling without the email
scanning option, it failed to stop the problem. Others have tried the same
and it failed to remedy the problem.

This is a trojan ... in your registry "Search.Hijack"
According to Dell, many computers have completely crashed. It took Dell 50
minutes to repair my computer. Good luck.

I see these errors as well, and I'm hoping to monitor this thread for a
solution.

Description of my symptoms: I run Outlook 2003. I manage a number of email
accounts in outlook, and I only see these errors with my msn account in
outlook which I believe uses outlook connector. And it also seems to trigger
more regularly on msn email with attachments. I also run Windows Live One
Care on my machine. I also see another error which seems to follow the
initial "virus checker unavailable" message: "Business Contact Manager --
Exception on HResult". This BCM error then continues to pop up frequently
for as long as I am viewing a message that reported the initial virus
checking problem.

ESA, I am hoping to determine if the connection here is Windows Live OneCare.
As you can see, there are several people dealing with the same issue. My
problem began while using Win LOC and have since uninstalled and put NOD32 in
its place for AV. I have run the OneCare Live cleanup utility provided by Neo
in another thread to no avail. As far as I know, it is not the Conficker worm
although one person reported the problem is a trojan and Dell fixed her pc.

I'm just speculating, but it seems like a virus check problem on the
msn/hotmail server side and its associated connectivity with outlook. For
me, the problem only appears when viewing mail in my msn account, and not in
any other email accounts that I manage in outlook. So I'm not suspecting
that it is an issue with WLOC. As well, I'm trusting that msn server side
virus checking is still scanning my inbound msn email, even though I'm seeing
these connectivity errors in outlook, so I'm thinking it's more a bug in a
recent MS software update than a virus issue. I think it's most likely a new
bug in Outlook Connector. Again, this is all speculation on my part. But
the error messages are certainly a nuisance. I've scanned my entire system
and it's clean.

ESA, that makes sense. I looked in the event viewer log and found that the
problems actually began shortly after the March 10 Outlook update...lots of
warnings and errors. Start, run, type in event viewer, review all catagories
and double click to see descriptions

I had this problem myself for several days. In an attempt to fix something
else I have somehow fixed the problem... Here is what I did - I upgraded the
outlook connector, did a disk clean up and deleted all temporary files and
restarted my computer. I no longer have the problem at this moment. I can
open all previous files I chose not open due to the virus check. Hope this
helps you...

Thanks. Your comments got me thinking about simple solutions-instead. If you
have followed the posts that I've made regarding this issue, I have had a
mysterious mail folder pop up in the left Message pane; "infected Items", so
I deleted both of them and as they were to go to the deleted items folder,
they disappeared all together. Nothing in the deleted items folder??? Now,
certain messages are checked by Outlook connector and open right up. Also,
when checking the hard drive for File Fragmentation, I defragged even tho it
was not required.

I had the exact same problem which also started in early April 2009. I updated Outlook Connector to the latest version and everything is fixed now.

I have been having the same problem.
I found that installing the latest upgrade to Outlook Connector solved my
problem.
