Error message "Do you want to make a copy?"

Paul

Everytime I double click on a Word file that's on my
desktop (to open it) I get the following:

File is being used by (me). Do you want to make a copy?

What's that all about and how can I make it stop?
Thanks.

I am not convinced it is wise to put documents on the desktop. What's the
matter with the documents folders?

Nothing wrong with document folders but sometimes it's
convenient to simply put a file you're working with on
the desktop.

I went through and deleted every temp (TMP) file that I
could find and I'm still getting the same message. Any
other ideas?

Frequently you have to reboot Windows to release the temp files.

Did you delete the *hidden* temporary files in the document and template
folders as indicated in the link?
These are filenames with the format
~$*.do?
