Error Installing XP Sp 2

G

Guest

While trying to install Sp2 on a machine with XP Home, I get a file in use
error on drvmain.sdb.
I've stopped all of the processes that aren't necessary, but it doesn't help.

I've also searched the KB and can't find a similar problem. I know that this
isn't a lot of information to go on, but I wasn't sure if this was just an SP
2 problem or not.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello JE,

Thanks for posting!

I understand that when installing SP2 on Windows XP Home, it gets the
drvmain.sdb in use error. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please
feel free to let me know.

Based on my experience, the issue may happen under the situation that some
process does not completely release when installing SP2. Therefore, I would
like to provide you with the following suggestions.

Suggestion 1: Please attempt to install the SP2 in Safe Mode.
-------------------------------
1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On
a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems,
you can press the F8 key when you see the Boot Menu.

2. In "Windows Advanced Option Menu", use the arrow keys to select Safe
Mode, and then press ENTER.

3. If you are running other operating systems on the computer, click
Microsoft Windows on the list that is displayed and then press ENTER.

If the issue persists, please go to next section.

Suggestion 2: Please attempt to perform a check disk
---------------------
I suggest you start the computer using the Microsoft Windows XP recovery
console, and then perform a check disk on the file system to see if this
issue can be resolved.

1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then
restart the computer. Select any options that are required to start the
computer from the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the
Recovery Console.
3. If your computer is configured for dual booting or multiple booting,
select the relevant Windows XP installation.
4. When you are prompted to do so, type the administrator password, and
then press ENTER.
NOTE: In Windows XP Home Edition, the administrator password is blank by
default.
5. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
"cd system32" (without the quotation marks)
6. Type the following command, and then press ENTER: "chkdsk /r" (without
the quotation marks)
7. Remove the Windows XP CD-ROM from the disc drive.
8. Type "exit" (without the quotation marks) to restart your computer.

Hope the information helps.

Hi,

This is how Jon and Steve solved this problem:

From: "Jon Erlandson" <jerla...@no_spam_sbcglobal.net>
Subject: Re: SP2 - Error drvmain.sdb is open - Success :)

What I wound up doing was a "Diagnostic Boot" with "Automatic
Updates" and "Cryptographic Services" enabled. I opened Explorer
into the directory for drvmain.sdb, made a copy of the file and
then deleted it. The file was automatically rewritten so I opened
"task manager" into Processes and saw a couple of instances of
svchost.exe running, took a gamble and ended the first process
then deleted drvmain.sdb. The file remained deleted without being
rewritten so I rebooted and checked the directory again for the
file and it was still deleted; SP2 then was able to complete the
install. I then copied drvmain.sdb back into the directory, set
things back for a "Normal Boot" and things seem fine so far :)

Torgeir Bakken's Link to Jon Erlandson's comments from 2004-09-27
worked fine.
However, I would add the following tips for users who are less
experienced than Jon:

1) He is referring to a "Diagnostic Boot" that is reached through
msconfig. To get there, go to Start, Run, type msconfig, on the
General Tab, put a check in the option "Diagnostic Startup". Then
go to the "Services" Tab and put checks in the boxes "Automatic
Updates" and "Cryptographic Services". If you fail to do this,
you can't use the SP2 download to validate the installation.

2) When Jon says to delete the "drvmain.sdb" files, he should have
said in BOTH places: C:\%windows directory% \AppPatch AND in
C:\%windows directory%\system32\dllcache where %windows directory%
will vary according to which version of XP you have. It may be
WINDOWS or WINNT or other, depending on your XP version.

3) Once you have copied the two drvmain.sdb files and put them
somewhere handy other than the directories where they are
installed (best with a new name), then delete BOTH copies of
the originals.

4) When you do that you will get a scary message saying that you
need to put your Windows XP Service Pack 1 CD now to restore the
files and system integrity. You need to press Cancel once and
maybe twice, depending on how many copies of drvmain you have
deleted. I deleted the copy in dllcache first, then the copy
in AppPatch.

5) I downloaded the "full" version of SP2 "for IT Professionals"
from the Windows Update site: WINDOWS- KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe and
used it to do the successful install of SP2. Since you do not have
access to the Windows Update icon when in a "diagnostic Boot",
that is the only option. DOWNLOAD the "IT Professionals" version
BEFORE doing any of the above.

6) I did not use Jon's suggestion of performing an "end task" on
svchost.exe using Task Manager before deleting the two copies of
drvmain.sdb, since I only had one copy of svchost.exe running when
I was in the "Diagnostic Boot" mode. It still worked fine.

I hope this helps the rest of you with this problem. I can't
imagine why Microsoft tech support did not recommend this
approach!! Nor why it is necessary at all?? From the discussion
I saw at Will Denny's link, it looks like there are a lot of
problems due to drvmain.sdb that need to be corrected!!

Well, I was able to get SP2 installed, or at least partly. Unfortunately,
after that, the system booted to a stop error. I found the cause of the stop
error in PSS ID Number: 885523.

Again unfortunately, I wasn't able to resolve the issue using the methods
described in the KB article because the system wouldn't boot and I could not
boot into the repair console. The machine is a Sony Vaio, that came with XP
Home pre-installed, but came with a recovery CD instead of original media for
the Op. Sys. So I could not boot to the recovery console to try to resolve
the issue. I only have copies of Pro, so I could not boot to the recovery
console with them.

I decided top copy any data off by moving the drive to another machine, the
use the restore cd to restore the system partition. More bad news. The
restore ended abruptly with an irrecoverable error, but not before trashing
the FAT.

The error after looking on Sony's web page indicated a hard drive error.
Since I had been moving the drive back and forth to another machine to copy
data, I formatted it and ran a chkdsk on it while it was in the other
machine. It said the drive was error free. And, it seems fine.

Now my problem is that I have an empty system partition on a clients machine
and no software to re-install the operating system.

My new question is, since it has a licensed version of XP Home, and I have
the serial number for activation, can I just pick up an XP Home upgrade from
the store and use the media to re-load. I can always use it to upgrade my
kids 98 machine so it won't be a complete waste of money. I would just like
to make sure that since the original was an OEM version that I can use the
same product key on a retail version.

I remember that with 98, OEM versions had OEM embeded in the product key, so
you couldn't use media from a retail build with an OEM key and vice versa.

Let me know if that makes sense, and if you know about the product keys.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your reply!

I am sorry to hear that you have to reload the system presently. As to your
new question, based on my experience, I think you are right. Just as you
indicated, it is impossible to use the retail media with an OEM key. The
rule also applies not only to Windows 98 but also to Windows XP. In
addition, since this is a licensing issue. If you still have any other
licensing related issue, please call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday,
6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft
licensing specialist, and you can get more detailed information from there.

Hi Jeff,

I have reviewed your post again. As you said, now your problem is that you
have an empty system partition on a clients
machine but no software to reload the system. Since you have recovery CD,
I suggest you use recovery CD to reload the system. Also, if there is any
questions on the recovery process, you may contact the OEM vendor for
further assistance.

Hope the infomation helps.

Best Regards,

Jason Tan
