Error in Registry

Dino B.

I had to replace a bad motherboard that caused an initial
system lockup, and then boot failures. After installing
the new motherboard I ran Norton Disk Doctor and Norton
Win Doctor. Win Doctor reported several errors that it
fixed, but had one that it couldn't fix. I ran regedit to
see if I could fix it, but couldn't.

The error is in trying to read some unkown key and value
in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\SharedDLLs

It reports the error as: Cannot display (5 rectangular
boxes): Error reading the value's contents.

I checked permissions for the key, and they are fine.

Anyone got any ideas on how to isolate and fix it?

Thanks.

Dino, did you replace the motherboard with one that was much different.
If yes, You have to reinstall WinXP and format
your hard drive because XP is looking for the old motherboard devices
which of course are no longer there.

Yes, I did replace it with one that is different. It's
very difficult to find an exact replacement for any
motherboard that is more than a year old. The old one was
a VIA P4XB-SA, and the new one is a Soyo SY-P4VTP.

I'm using the same chip and memory. The sound and
ethernet are now from the board, and the USB is now 2.0
versus 1.1. I had to buy a new AGP that was 1.5v. Other
peripherals are the same as before. The system came up,
did its song and dance about new hardware, and then
everything seems to work fine, except for regedit and
WinDoctor.
