Error 720: No PPP control protocols configured

This is the error message I get when trying to dial-up to my ISP as well as
any other ISP we have tried. I have researched this error and have tried all
the winsock fixes out there without any luck. One other thing that makes me
think it isn't the winsock is that I can get the wireless card to get on our
wireless network and it surfs the net fine. The dial-up is the only thing
that won't log on. Now, I
will write down which protocols and etc. are being used by the dial-up
connection and include them here: Network Monitor Driver, Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP), and QOS Packet Scheduler are all installed and checked. Unchecked
protocols include NWLINK IPX/SPX/NetBIOS compatible protocol, File and
Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and Client for Microsoft Networks.
If any of this rings a bell, please let me know. Thanks for all your time.
Any help here would be great.

Dave,

The "Error 720" appears to be quite versatile. I did a KB search thru
Microsoft, and came up with several key articles.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=152605
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314076
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=810979
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

I think you already read 810979 and 811259 - they are the ones that mention LSP
/ Winsock / TCP/IP corruption. 152605 looks interesting though.

Thanks for the reply chuck, Yeah, I have looked at most of those. I am
including a little more info here. I tried a different modem on the
suggestion of my ISP which made no difference. Each connection can will
dial-up, it will verify user name and password and it gets to registering the
computer on the network and right when you think the message will disappear
like it should and you should be online, that is when it comes back with the
error message 720. Does this give you any more clues? Thanks for your time.

One more thing, I had an idea that it might work to reinstall Dial-Up
Networking and the TCP/IP in Win XP Pro. Would you have any clue on how to
go about that? Or if it is even possible in WinXP pro? I know I could do it
in Win 9x pretty easily. Thanks again.

Dave,

You can't un install TCP/IP in Windows XP, you can just reset it ("install").
That is an important procedure though in this case, didn't you see it?

Let's do some analysis - provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from this
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Note there is no detail in either "browstat status" or "ipconfig /all" logs that
can help any bad guy attack you, so please don't munge any details.

Alright, Chuck, Here is the info:

first from ipconfig:

I would also post the browstat status, however the file it created had
absolutely nothing in it. I did the command several times just to be sure
but I still get nothing in it.

Thanks for your time.

OK, Chuck, I did finally get it to show some stuff. Seems you actually have
to have an active network connection, sorry about that. I had all cables
unplugged. Not sure if it will make a difference or not since I know the LAN
part works, it's jsut the dial-up that doesn't work. but here is the
browstat:

Status for domain BLACKN3T on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{C93C44E2-1F59-40C0-AA95-E871EB9D4470}
Browsing is active on domain.
Master browser name is: DELL
Master browser is running build 2600
1 backup servers retrieved from master DELL
\\DELL
There are 0 servers in domain BLACKN3T on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{C93C44E2-1F59-40C0-AA95-E871EB9D4470}
There are 1 domains in domain BLACKN3T on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{C93C44E2-1F59-40C0-AA95-E871EB9D4470}

It may not make a difference, but I have tried a few things. I have an
identical Laptop here, both run XP Pro SP2 and I have gone through all the
services of the one that works fine and matched their status' accordingly
which also made no difference, still get the error 720. I have even made
sure mcafee was out of the services and disabled so no firewall intrusion,
but you would think if it was firewall that the LAN wouldn't work either.
Anyway, hope all this helps. Thanks.
