Error 1722 - Windows Installer Package...

Guest

I get this error -- There is a problem with the Windows Installer package.
A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your
support personnel or package vendor.

I contacted the authors of Retrospect 7.5. I've tried to install the latest
version - error. Their suggestion - unstall version 7.0. Again in the
uninstall process the same error.

The latest windows installer was downloaded within the past 24 hours. I got
this message before the latest version of the installer and after installing
the latest installer.

I could not uninstall or install in safe mode.

I am at a loss. Help is appreciated.

Thank you.

Reboot.

Click Start>Run, type: %temp% and click OK.
Press Ctrl+A to select all, then press Delete.

Click Start>Run, type: temp and click OK.
Press Ctrl+A to select all, then press Delete.

Windows will not let you delete any files in use....just skip them if prompted, and
continue to delete the remaining files, then empty the Recycle Bin.

After that, please follow the instructions on this web page exactly:

Update to the Latest InstallShield Installation Engines
http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=q108322

Then try uninstalling your version 7 of Retrospect, and install version 7.5

If that does not help, go through the list here:

How to resolve Common "Windows Installer" Problems
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=555175

An absolute "last resort" method is to use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to
remove all references Retrospect only, and then try the installation:

Windows Installer Cleanup Utility -
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/MSICLEAN.htm
and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=290301

Just to be safe, before using the CleanUp Utility, export the following two Registry
keys to a file and save them to your Documents folder or Desktop:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Patches

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Patches

Thank you.

I think I've got other issues with this system.

Click Start>Run, type: temp and click OK.
Press Ctrl+A to select all, then press Delete.

At this point, the systemseemed like it was taking a long time. Taskmanager
was running and system idle process was at 99%. However, when I tried to
move around task manager, the system hung. It was impossible to shut down,
except power off.

The system was rebooted safe mode - command prompt. everythng in
windows\temp was deleted -- del *.*

The recycle bin was already empty -- the usual state.

I have noticed over the past two weeks, or so, that some deletes from
windows explorer seemed to take longer than normal, but did not pay much
attention to it.

Since the install process is indicating a program did not finish, if it was
deleting files, could this be part of my problem?

My next step is to proceed with the update th the Latest InstallShield.
However, I wanted to pass this by you first.

Thanks.

How many files were you deleting at one time from the Temp folder?

What is the hardware on the system....namely: processor type and speed, amount of
RAM, size of hard drive and amount of free space left on it?

How many files were you deleting at one time from the Temp folder? Don't
know. Probably a couple of hundred or so. When they were deletd with the
dos command del *.* running in safe mode, it was almost instantaneous to
delete evrything.

What is the hardware on the system....namely: processor type and speed,

OK....I thought perhaps the system was older with a slow processor or insufficient
memory, but that's not the case.

Carry on with the InstallShield update, and let us know the results.

Thank you.

Where things stand. InstallShield was updated. No change. The installed
version was the same as the updated version.

The Install Update Cleaner Utility was downloaded, installed and run against
retrospect 7.0. After that, 7.5 could be installed and was successfully
installed.

So far, so good.

7.5 was run and ths system crashed - it simply rebooted once the program
started.

7.0 was doing the same thing. That is why 7.5 was purchased. I could not
get support on an older version so the newer, latest, was purchased. It has
the same problems.

I'll contact the manufacturer Monday. This is consistentatly reproducable.

I was able to keep the mini dump file.

That is an interesting situation. The notices on the screen indicate that
the files will be created in a special directory. However, if I do not copy
those files to another locaton prior to closing the notification on the
screen, they are deleted when the screen notice is closed. Over the past few
years, I've never found anyone interested in using a system dump.

Oh, well....

Thank you for your patience. You have gotten me past my inability to
install the newer software.

Fred

P.S. If you want to jump in on the system crashes....

The most recent entries in the event viewer - applicaton and system have
been captured (screen copy).

Again, thank you very much.

Re: your system crashes, rather than posting an Event Viewer screen capture,
doubleclick each error event in the list to open its Event Properties, and click the
Copy icon on the right (just below the arrow buttons), to copy the event details to
the Clipboard. Then paste the details into a reply here, go to the next error event
and do the same, until all your relevant error event details are copied and pasted
here, then send it on to us.

A minidump analysis may not be too useful, but might be worth a try before trying a
full dump. The files should be in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder.

The manufacturer was contacted and retrospect is now running. An option was
changed because it appears that VSS - Volume Shadow Copy Service is not
functioning correctly. With the option changed to not require this when it
runs.

VSS was set to manual and not running. It was changed to automatic, system
rebooted and verified that it was running. Retrospect was started with the
open file backup option enabled and the system crashed as in the past. This
option will be disabled until the problem is resolved.

This now brings up the question -- how do I get this repaired? I've seen
that there is an option to repair the OS on the Xp distribution (retail
edition) disk.

I've been fortunate in that since the OS was installed 10/03/03, I've not
had any serious problems.

Is there a method of repairing this service or does the OS need to be
"installed" with the repair option?

If it is necessary to install using the repair option, are there any side
effects, other than everything working properly? Anything I should be alert
to?

I assume the prudent thing is to backup the system before anything is done.
I'm working to be prepared for that within 24 hours.

Again, thank you for your patience and endurance.

Doing a Google search for:
Volume Shadow Copy Service VSS and Retrospect
I see more than a few other people having the same or similar issues, and I wonder
if it is due to a fault in VSS, or in the backup software involved.

I do see a suggestion from MS support, to do a Repair install in this
situation....you might want to try it.
