Error 1608 during installation

I recently purchased a new computer. While installing
Word 2002 from the CD I get the message "Could not find
qualifying product" (or something similar) and a
notification of Error Code 1608. I purchased this as a
stand alone product not part of an office suite so i dont
understand what the problem is. I had no problem
installing it on my old computer. Any suggestions?

The message infers that you are trying to install an UPGRADE version rather
than a full version. Setup is looking for some qualifying application. It
only needs to see the setup disk for this and the installation will
continue.

What you have is an upgrade version of the software. If you have the disks
from the earlier version, insert them in the CD drive when Word goes looking
for the earlier version. It's not actually necessary to install it first.
