Error 1500 on trying to install software for mouse and keyboard

Hi,

I upgraded my keyboard and mouse by buying MSFT Wireless
Desktop Elite.
This comes with a new wireless mouse as well. Wireless
Intellimouse Explorer 2.0

Both items seem to be working, but I have a problem when
I try to run the software. After placing the disk in the
drive, and then following the prompts, and of course,
aggreeing to the User Agreement, I then get a message
saying:

"Error 1500" "Another installation is in progress" "do
you want to Retry or Cancel?"

I hit Retry, but that is a waste of time, as the same
exact error message appears.

I have no other installations going on.

I even tried to uninstall my prior keyboard and mouse
versions that are currently on the computer, but it would
not let me.

Please advise!!!

My regular email address is (e-mail address removed)

Please reply there or at this site.

Thank you,
Jeff

Thank you Kelly, for the link, as I copied and pasted it.
It provided lots of articles on this subject. It even
covered an article related to MSFT Office, and MSFT's
solution.

Listen, i'm not a techie type of guy. I know the basics.
That means I know enough to NOT go ahead and play around
with the Registry, as some of the diff links suggest as
solutions.

Here's the latest info:
I get this error 1500 now, anytime I try to install or
uninstall something. This error 1500 keeps telling me
there is another installation in progress.

(FYI, and as a reference)
Very recently I uploaded Windows updated Service pack.
The install seemed to go through just fine. The only
thing unusual, is that shortly thereafter, I was getting
a message on my task bar that it had noticed I had
attached new hardware, and it was referring to MSFT
Money.
This was not the case at all, as this program came
preloaded when I bought this computer from Gateway in Mar
2002.
I tried responding to the links to work through this, to
update or do whatever was needed to clear things up.
Eventually, the message stopped appearing.
The reason why I brought this up, is that subsequently,
the error 1500 started appearing, as I have noted. Thus,
I tried to uninstall MSFT money, as I do not use it
anyway.
I get the same message, and I am unable to uninstall it.

I tried to load my Norton Systemworks 2002 (which I had
uninstalled back in May). I was hopeful that after using
their utilities, that it would clear up the possible
Registry problems. Unfortunatley, I could not install
this program either, as I got the same message.

I still ran the utility program, (It ran from the disk
drive) and I ran Norton Win Doctor, and Disk Doctor
sucessfully. Unfortunately, even after all that, the
problem still remains. I have rebooted as another try. No
luck.

The only thing I can think of, is that this appears
directly related to me uploading the new Windows Service
pack. I have not installed any other programs that would
explain this Error 1500.

Can you possibly provide a *Specific* problem resolution
for this problem???

I searched the MSFT site previously, and the only thing I
found, was the so called solution for the error 1500
related to MSFT Office.

The thing is, from what I can see, this problem is not
directly related to any specific program, as this "Error
1500" appears on ANY program I attempt to install, or ANY
program I attempt to uninstall.

Please help, as I'm at my wit's end, and do not know what
to do. Gateway says it is not their issue, it is MSFT.
Yet MSFT does not seem to be addressing this problem.

Thank you,
Jeff
