Error? 1158

Peter

I had beeter start a new thread as my problem changed slightly.

I am unable to run HP's installing wizard as always, half-way through, I get
a box with a button that has nothing on it. The box is totally empty except
for a computer icon and next to it the number 1158. HP told me the problem
had to do with a corrupt Windows Installer, but now I don't think so.

I have run SFC and it did not report anything wrong, so I assume all my
system files are ok.

I have looked in regedit and the path to msiexec.exe is correct.

I have searched the net and found:

1158 Error populating strings. Verify that all strings in Setup.ini
and any language-specific INI files in the Disk1 folder (such as 0x0409.ini)
are valid.

but have no idea what it means, what to do with it and what to do next.

Can anybody help, please?

Thank you

Peter

Hello Rick

Yes, I saw that site.

But as I said in the earlier message everything looks fine with the Windows
Installer.

What I want to know is what this Error 1158 is all about and what can I do
about it:

Thank you

I can only remember getting this box coming up when I try to run the
installation of the HP driver . And I think that I had the same problem
some time ago with the 98SE that I also have. Which would indicate that
maybe the problem lies with HP themselves.

I don't know what you mean or I should do regarding
Do you mean: (such as 0x0409.ini) ?

Any help appreciated.

Hi Peter,

It very well could be the machine itself, and contacting HP with the matter
may be a good idea. Yes, I do mean examining the .ini file itself that is
referred to - the error message is specifically pointing it out as being the
problem. While the file itself may not be, you need to rule it out.

hello Rick

But is the file 0x0409.ini not an XP file? because in that case by runnig
SFC I assume it is confirmed that the file is ok?

How else can I check it?

Sorry for going on and on...

Hi,

No. The 0x0409.ini file is created by the installation routine, it is not a
Windows file. It will likely be found in a \temp folder.
