Error 0x800ccc0f when sending via SMTP

I am running Outlook 2002 on XP SP1 (tried to upgrade to SP2 recently,
but ran out of space ...) - anyway, a couple of days ago I started
getting the "connection to the server was interrupted" error message
with above #. While being able to receive emails just fine, I can't
send anything.

To my confusion really, because I ran the current setup for quite some
time with no problems and none of my settings have changed recently (to
my knowledge). It is also weird that other computers on the same
network don't seem to have this problem. A G4 running OS X with
Entourage, however, partially is experiencing the same: two out of four
SMTP accounts can't send anymore (but all can receive).

I turned NAV and Pers. Firewall on and off, deleted to mails in the
outbox, sent new ones, disabled email scanning, verified the POP/SMTP
server settings - to no avail ... I'm running out of ideas ...

Anyone? - Thx.

I too have a similar error message. I recently installed Office 2000 on my
new XP SP2 computer. Now I can only receive emails but cannot send via a
single SMTP sever (blueyonder).

XP SP2 firewall is off and NIS firewall was disabled without success.

I too would appreciate help.

That error is often caused by failure to authenticate to the outgoing
server.

Try completely uninstalling NAV, rebooting, then install NAV without any of
the email scanning options selected. Just turning the email scan off seems
not to do the trick with NAV.

Thanks a lot for the reply - it didn't work ... I uninstalled NIS/NAV
rebooted and still couldn't send - but now OL started 'ignoring' my
outbox (no error message anymore).

I went into accounts and ran "test account settings" only to find out
that not only could the test mail not be sent (like before), but the
SMTP server coulnd't be contacted either anymore (new).

At this point I tried "telnet <myserver> 25" and bingo - apparently
someone had closed that port (apparently slowly over time and without
telling anyone, because I tried this days ago and was able to connect).

I switched to port 587 and guess what - I finally am outbound again.

NAV/NIS is reinstalled and works like a charm.

.... on a sidenote: I finally got around trying SP2 for XP ... and
turned right around and uninstalled it again. Boy does that bog the
system (especially EI) down. Back to SP1 and happy with it ... :)
