Error 0 on install

I'm trying to up grade form 98 to XP Pro. On the install / startup I get
this error message:
Unexpected error ( 0 ) occurred@ line 1768 in
d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c.

XP fails to start up and I have to go back to 98. I can't figure why XP is
even trying to access my D drive. That is a separate HD on my system that I
only use for downloaded files and backup info. My main HD has two partitions
C and E and this is what 98 and all my other soft ware is on. This is
frustrating to say the least as I now have a partition installation on XP
and can't remove it without a total clean sweep of my drive and soft ware. I
don't want to do this.

Can this be fixed?

Thanks. The error number is different than the one I got but the other
information seems the same. Does this matter?
