Erroneous Windows Product Activation Message?

For no apparent reason I have just got a message telling me that the
hardware on my system has changed significantly and I need to reactivate
Windows and have 3 days left for activation. Needless to say, the hardware
hasnt changed at all let alone 'significantly'.
I'm going to try an earlier system restore point (I seem to get one created
a day) but has anyone seen this happen before? Couldnt find anything via
google.

[ no viruses or spyware on this system AFAICS ]

OH well that didnt work (the restore worked but it still wants to
reactivate)..
Any ideas why it should be doing this when nothing has chnaged AFAIC and
certainly not hardware, and any ideas as to best thing to do now? I'd like
to know whats caused this since otherwise presumably I'm going to be
continually reactivating it. No hardware errors in system manager.there are
some windows file protection errors system events though .

I had this happen once and it drove me crazy trying to figure out what
kicked off the activation wizard. It turned out to be a virtual CD
drive that I installed via a program that copies DVDs. Once I got rid
of the virtual drive and restored my system via an image I made
earlier with DI 2002, all returned to normal.

Don't fiddle. It will only take a moment to get on the net, go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
and Activate on the Internet now. which takes about 20 seconds

Probably something has damaged the record on the machine - that is what
the 3 days is provided for.
