Windows XP Epson CX6600 VS XP desktop computer

I have an epson cx66oo all in one printer/scanner. This problem started suddenly. Everything used to work just fine. Now the computer can not tell the scanner to scan a document. The computer can send a message to the printer to print, it just will not scan. The error message comes on the screen to check connections etc to find the scanner. I have a VAIO Sony computer using windows xp. If I take a similiar lap top computer and hook it up to the Epson CX6600 everything works great. Un hook the Epson from the lap top and back to the desk top.......scanner is not recoginized. Any ideas will be appreciated. I have removed all the software and re-installed at least 3 times so far.
