Epson all-in-one (work around)

My wife uses an Epson printer/ scanner that was given as a gift.

Though I generally am not in favor of scanner/printers, this one had
been working fine for over two years...but yesterday the scanner portion
quit.

When a scan was started a "cannot communicate" error was
displayed....although no problems were found in the device manager...
and the printer portion was fine.

I was just about to clutter up her desk by adding a dedicated scanner,
when I noticed that the all-in-one had an option to scan to flash card.

I'll be darned, that worked fine and the computer can read directly from
the card.

The only thing you have to watch for in that case,
is the computer attempting to boot from the flash
in the printer/scanner. Sometimes that upsets the
boot process, as the computer becomes "too interested"
in the flash storage of the printer.

It booted OK with the card inserted,

Interesting. I have an elderly Epson all-in-one that I keep around
because it does beautiful photo work. Your post prompted me to search
mine to see if it even used memory cards and I discovered that it
actually has two slots -- one SD and one CF. The latter reveals how old
the printer is -- I haven't seen a CF card on a system in years and even
the last holdouts, professional cameras, seem to have dropped the
format. Still haven't checked to see if mine will scan to a card but it
hardly matters since I use another scanner in a more convenient location
for such work so as long as the scanner is working as the input for the
copy function I should be fine.

Well, this one is two years old and it also has the SD and CF

for me it was one way to find a use for that old 250 meg CF I had
sitting in a drawer.

If I could not have come up with a work-around it would have been no big
deal as I have plenty of spare scanners....more a matter of desk-top
clutter and yet another USB cable

Was it printing at the time? They can't scan while they are printing or
using the card slot, they can only do one thing with the USB at a time.
I was scanning a lot to my pc and wanting to print a couple of copies
of each scan after editing it and that was when I found out it could
only do one or the other at a time.

I am aware the device can only do one thing at a time...
and frankly, that's fine with me.

As to myself...I can barely do 1/2 thing at a time.

I know exactly what you mean having cfs/me :)
