Epson C86 Not Printing in Black

P

PLB

I have an Epson C86 printer that may(?) have clogged heads for the
black ink, but there are some complications. Let me describe them to
you.
I recently changed the black ink in the printer. Since then I have not
been able to get anything printed in black when I run conventional
software. I have consulted with the Epson help desk and run the various

repairs and diagnostics. I have also purchased another black ink
cartridge. To date, nothing has worked.

Here is the complication. I am using an iMac. The iMac has a program
called Grab which captures whatever is on the screen and allows you to
save it and print it. I think it is basically a "screen scrapper" (if
that is the right term). When I use the Grab program, I get the black
printing. For example, if I run and Excel spreadsheet having both back
and colored annotations and print directly from Excel I only get the
colors - but NO black. When I run Grab to capture the spreadsheet and
then print it, I get what appears to be black and all the other colors.

This is difficult for me to understand. If the black head is clogged
why would it fail to print under Excel, but print successfully when
stripped off and printed under Grab? Evidently the black head is not
clogged all the time but is somehow sensitive to the type of program
that is commanding it???

Should I buy a kit to clean the printer head

I'm guessing somewhat here, but it may be that the Grab software
actually uses the CMY colors together on top of one another to make
"black", while the other software may try to print the black from the
black ink head/cartridge.

As such, I suspect you have a clogged black head (a very common
occurrence with the C86 and similar printers).

Please email me, and I will send you a manual I've written that
described the common causes of non-printer heads in these printers, and
the solutions.

There is no cost for the manual, it uses common household cleaners, and
you will not be spammed.

Try this, as I've read of several other folks lately using a C series
printer having the same problem after changing a cartridge for new one and
not getting ink to print from the new cartridge. One fellow, only a couple
of weeks ago wrote back that the procedure worked.
It appears that the valve mechanism on the cartridge may be sluggish and
not really be releasing ink when the spike enters through the broken plastic
membrane to allow ink to flow.
With the printer on, get the printhead to move into cartridge change
position by pushing the droplet button for about a second. Remove the black
cartridge and take a straightened out paperclip and push it back and forth
in the open orifice of the cartridge two or three times while holding the
cartridge over some newspaper so as not to get any ink on your furniture.
Replace the cartridge and give it another try.

Arthur's already replied thoughtfully, and with the same speculation
that I posted earlier in another NG.....

My q. to you, Davy, is: Does your newsreader allow you to see threaded?
That way, you'd have seen the previous replies to the OP.
