Epson C 86

I have an Epson C86 printer. The other day I ran out of black ink and
replaced the cartridge with a new Epson cartridge. When I attempt to
print a text document it will not respond if the text is all black. If
some of the text are colors other than black, then it will print that
portion of the text, albeit not the exact color. Could it be that I
have purchased a bad cartridge. I hate to spend a bunch of money on
another cartridge only to find out that the problem is with the
printer. Does anyone have a suggestion?

When I discussed this with Epson support they suggested that I take the
printer to a service center, which by the time you pay shipping and
charges will probably cost more tha

Have you tried running a cleaning cycle? I haven't had an epson for a
while but I would try that.

Was there a tape on the cartridtge that needed to be pulled off before
inserting into the printer? You can easily check it by moving the head into
cartridge removal position. Push the ink droplet button for 1 - 2 seconds,
but less than 3 seconds. Lift the head cover and examine. If not, then as
the last poster recommended start running up to 5 cleaning cycles in this
manner using the software: cleaning, nozzle check, head cleaning, nozzle
check, etc. Do this up to 5 time, but no more than that. If you get no
change in the black then you may have a bad cartridge, but you also may have
a head clog. If that is the situation you want to e-mail Art Entich who can
supply you with several unclogging alternatives that may work.
