epson 3200 -- auto scan won't recognize image type

If I use the auto scan mode, it recognizes slides as color photos. If
I switch to professional or home mode, and specify that these are
color positive, a single long narrow scan appears, in a single color.
If I indicate they are color negative, scans take forever, but a file
never appears on my screen. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all
Epson software and photoshop software, as well as have gotten the
TWAIN file from the Epson website.

I am not a technical guru and am unsure how to proceed. This was one
of those situations where, last time I used the scanner it worked,
this time it didn't. I've installed all microsoft updates (I'm on
Windows 2000 Professional and use the USB port).

Anyone with any suggestions? thanks.

You are inserting the holder correctly so that the calibration notch is
toward the top and you have removed the reflective insert that covers the
TPU when reflective scans are made right? Sorry to be so basic, but some
people haven't done this stuff and reported the same results. Can you
manually crop an area and get it to scan correctly. Get into manual mode by
clicking the arrow next to Preview and choosing Normal.

i am absolutely mortified, but grateful that you asked the basic
questions. Guess its not as bad as asking if the scanner is plugged
in, but apparently, in a spate of pre-spring cleaning, I stored the
reflective cover in the scanner. Thank you for your help, I can stop
reinstalling software now.
