Epson 3490 problem scanning slides

Chrisssssss.........

I have a brand new Epson 3490 scanner.
When scanning slides, I've tried all settings but the only setting that
doesn't produce very 'pixelly' rough-edged pics is the Full Auto setting.
The problem is that because most slides I'm scanning were taken underground,
the scanner assumes that the film is NEGATIVE film rather than POSITIVE
slide film (on most, but not all slides).
I have tried the "Customise" button to select Positive slide film for every
scan, but there is no option to do this (you can select FILM but not
positive or negative).
Is there a way round this design problem or have I wasted my money?
Any advice appreciated.
Chrissssss.......
PS I have tried the Professional setting but cannot find any settings that
produce results without the 'pixelly' rough-edged pics.

Hi...

After you choose Film (as opposed to Document) the drop down
box immediately underneath allows you to select positive film
(slides, of course) or colour negative film.

This however doesn't explain your pixellated results. Are you
scanning at a high enough resolution? Try 2400 or higher, see
how it then looks to you.

Hi Ken,
Thanks for the reply. I have now tried res at 2400 and the results are now
fine. What confuses me is that at this res, the scan takes longer than that
done on Auto setting (which has a greyed out resolution of 300!).
I'll get used to the Proff settings anyway as I've got more control there.
Very much appreciated, Chrissss.....
