Enquiry about Windows Newsgroups

Dear members,
When I have an enquiry about any programme outside microsoft programmes ; I
get the following reply: This is not the place for your enquiry.

What I want to know is, all the Newsgroups here are concerned only with
microsoft programmes in general or with all computers enquiries? . If with
all computers and programmes outside microsoft, how do you get to those
groups?

Microsoft operating systems and software. Issues which relate to running
third party software on Windows are fair game if the problems stem from
Windows. If you are inquiring about problems running a third program itself
then you should first seek a forum for that program. For example, if you
have a question about using Adobe Illustrator you would want to ask in an
Adobe sponsored forum (on the Adobe website). If you are getting a Windows
error when trying to install Illustrator then might ask both in a newsgroup
for Windows and in the Adobe forums.

The best starting point with any question is to Google on all or part of the
question. Do more than just pick a keyword; try putting your whole
question into the searchbar. It's amazing how accurate the search results
can get that way. If you are getting an error message, just type the
message into Google and search.

The short answer is that all newsgroups on msnews.microsoft.com (and
replicated on other servers) are very much Microsoft-centric.

What news server are you using? See if you can obtain the list of
newsgroups available on your server. If you can see nothing but groups
starting with microsoft.public.*, you're probably using a Microsoft server
that hosts nothing but those groups. If you have generic inquiries that
fall outside of this, you'll probably want "the other" newsgroups...whose
name can start with alt.*, comp.*, rec.*, etc (actually, just about anything
but microsoft.*). Nowadays, there are very few free servers that carry
those newsgroups and will also let you post.

Your other option would be to use Google Groups--but I've never used it to
post to Usenet. Somebody else will have to fill you in on those details.
The Google Groups interface (IMHO) is also not as nice to use as a dedicated
news reader.

Since you're using the Microsoft web interface, you only have access to
newsgroups that are hosted on Microsoft's news server. If you want access to
other Usenet newsgroups you should check with your internet provider first to
see if they offer newsgroup access. Also, I've never used one but I believe
you'll find some free news servers available on the internet.

An alternative is to use Google groups.

The reason for blocking posts is due entirely to spamming the entire range
of newsgroups using cross posting ad-nauseum.

You've hit one of the problems when you use non-Microsoft programs.

Which newsgroups that you have access to depends on the server. In my case,
as I use sbcglobal,
I just search their list of newsgroup.
However, it would not occur to me to post a question about VM/CMS to a
windowsxp newsgroup.
