End program window appears on shut down

I recently got my computer, Windows XP home, a few days
ago. I installed an external modem, even though there was
an internal as I was told the internal wouldn't work, but
it did, so I uninstalled the external modem.

Ever since then, whenever I shut down or restart my
computer the "End Program" box appears
for "wupdater.exe". It always says it isn't responding
and to either cancel or close.

I was wondering if there was anyway to fix this? As I've
only had my computer a few days and nothing like this
happened on my old computer.

Thanks alot

I don't mean to disagree, but I thought wupdater.exe was
windows update program that downloaded updates and
installed them for you? If its not, then will it be safe
to just delete the file? There was 2 wupdater files one
in
C://windows/prefetch (I deleted this but its still
happening) and there is also one in
C://programfiles/commonfiles/updater

Thank you
