I am unable to setup my new account with windows mail, because I do not
understand what to register as my SMTP or POP3 account. I have a vista
windows and I have comcast.net. I want to create a windows mail account but
don't understand what I have to type in those to spots where they want to
know SMTP or POP3:



for ex:



smtp.mail.comcast.net (doesn't work)

pop3.mail.comcast.net (doesn't work)



or should I use something different, please help.

I cannot receieve my emails. I have tried and tried to set up my account
with no avail.

Brenda,
You need to change server settings that you are using for Comcast.
They should be:
Incoming Server Setting:
mail.comcast.net
Port:110
Uncheck SSL/TSL connection

Outgoing Server:
smtp.comcast.net
Port: 587 or 465
Check SSL/TSL connection

Also on the Server tab> Select Authentication is Required when sending message.

provide an answer to Bette and her issue now that you have done the above ??

That is the current settings that I use for my seven (7) comcast.net accounts.
Been using these settings for over two (2) years, for both for the PCs, and a
notebook I have.

Both 587 w/SSL and 465 w/SSL
SSL connection may not be required while connected to their service for the
outgoing server. But it does work for me.

The Port 465 setting is used for travelers, when connecting to Hotel Wi-fi
systems and non Comcast services. This was before Comcast started requiring
Port: 587 while even connected to their service. Port: 587 may also work for
Outgoing server even while not connected to Comcast service, but the SSL setting
may need to be check for this to work.

Here is the web page for setting up Outlook Express when traveling (Use of Port:
465), to receive or send mail when not connected to the Comcast service. These
setting can also be used while connected to their service, so you do not have to
change them back, when connected to their service.

It also says in the web page I include to use Port: 995 w/SSL, but I am able to
use Port:110 w/o SSL, but that may be because I use a SPAM filter program, also.
The SPAM filter program filter does not have built in SSL support either.

As far as we know, Comcast does not support port 465 or SSL.
It's best to follow their published instructions:

Thanks for that information.
It is strange that Comcast does not publish all their available
mail settings on one web page.

Rather than hijack Bette's thread, why not start a new thread and include whether or not your are following the instructions from
your isp...

Comcast:
POP (incoming mail): mail.comcast.net
SMTP (outgoing mail): smtp.comcast.net

You might have to logon to the Comcast site with your username and pw to see the source and instructions.
You will also have to verify if Comcast requires a specific incoming and outgoing port number and the type of encryption
e.g. Incoming Port 110 or 995 with SSL encryption and also the Outgoing Port 25 or 587 or 465 with SSL encryption.
