eMachine will not take Service Pack

I have an eMachines M2350 notebook that will NOT take a service pack. I
have tried relentlessly to update this notebook without any luck. I have
tried windows updates, tried loading it from CD and have also tried loading
into safe mode and none of them work. I have googled everything I can find
and can not find a solution. Can anyone help please? This machine seems to
be stuck with SP1. I am able to go out and download some updates and
install them but not the Service packs. I did find some bad sectors on the
hard drive with a check disk...any body with any thoughts would be greatly
appreciated!

When it finishes everything after this it just simply states that setup has
cancelled and also Event Viewer shows nothing!

Thanks
George

Which Service Pack are you applying ? There are several known issues
with Service Pack 3 that commonly fail. Usually this is an inability writing
Registry values or replacing specific files. While it doesn't always write
an entry to Event Logs the SP install should have a failure message at the
point the process fails. For now I would boot to Safe Mode and actually
watch the installation process. Normally a failure stops the install at
least
momentarily to display the error/issue and requires the user to dismiss
the message.

Bad blocks is never a good thing. This is sometimes an indicator of pending
failure. You should examine the drive's SMART table to determine how
close to a Failure condition the drive is currently at. You can do this with
a monitoring application called SpeedFan Version 4.37.
http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
*Click the SMART (Tab) and select your drive. You are interested in the
Reallocated Sector Count value.

And the preparation you did before installing was? Which service pack
are you trying to install, SP 2 or 3?

I turned everything off, except the firewall, that was starting up and as
mentioned ran a check disk. Also, tried it in safe mode. What kind of
preps are needed? I have updated many machines and have never had a machine
not take a service pack! Also, did check the compatibility tool and all
was okay there!

Not sure what to advise. May want to look over the following KB
article and see if any apply to your situation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949388

There should be a Service Pack setup logfile in your \Windows
folder. It's a little cryptic but should have the failure data you need.

Microsoft also provides free technical support for SP3 install. You
may need to turn to them for help. Sorry I don't have the URL handy.

On certain PCs, the IntelPPM driver needs to be disabled first before
either SP2 or SP3 is applied. For more info, see:

http://msinfluentials.com/blogs/jes...ed-computer-boot-after-installing-xp-sp3.aspx

Also, how large is your hard drive, and how much free space do you have?

And in case you haven't seen this page, this is a good reference:

HOW TO get WinXP SP1 fully patched:

1. Download & save the installer for WinXP SP3 to your desktop:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4

[Yes, you can skip WinXP SP2 altogether.]

2. Read & heed:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldro...requisites-for-a-successful-installation.aspx

3. Logged in as Administrator, if necessary, double-click on the saved file
to install WinXP SP3. Follow all prompts; be patient, and reboot twice when
the install completes.

4. Do Resolution Method 2 here (trust me):
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

5. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | Install any required software
then click on CONTINUE | Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any critical
security updates offered. Again, follow all prompts.

[I do NOT recommend installing IE7 via Windows Update.]

6. Make certain that Automatic Updates is enabled; cf.

Thanks to everyone for their efforts here. It turns out that R. McCarty was
correct about the hard drive about to bite the dust. It has a bunch of
Reallocated Sectors and according to SpeedFan is about to bite the dust.
That is the only explanation that I have found so far that explains this
phenom that I have never seen before. Again, the message after trying to
install SP2 is that "setup has cancelled" with no explanation whatsoever!
What is funny about the hard drive showing 0% health is that it runs
great??? Just will not upgrade to a Service Pack.

Of course Daves thought about, IntelPPM driver needs to be disabled, may
have something to do with this?

Thanks again!
