Either USB or Router II

To continue my earlier thread, the Router has now been working with
just a single, brief, inexplicable loss of connection (even though the
reception was showing as very good).
But my USB hubs continue to be problematic. They only recognise my
memory stick if I hold it at the right angle. My scanner doesn't show
up at all, even though it made some noises when I clicked on the exe
file for the Scan Gear setup.
Does that sound like software?
With thanks in advance.

Once you said that - it should be obvious that "software" is not your issue.
;-)

After all - unless you have an internal camera and some funky software
controlling what your machine can use (by sight identification) - how would
the OS know what angle you are using a device at?

That's what I thought but last time it happened and I took it back to
the shop, they insisted it was likely to be software.
The strange thing is that *all* my USB ports have suddenly gone this
way, and I haven't been mistreating them. It's just that some of them
yield a 'Device not recognised' bubble and some of them yield
nothing. And some of them seem rather better than others, depending on
the device being used.

What's more, it doesn't mater *what* angle I hold the scanner USB
connection, it doesn't show in My Computer.
I wondered whether this was to do with the fact that my scanner was
built a couple of years before Vista came along; but I have installed
the add-ons that the company said I needed. And shouldn't it at least
be *recognised* with something more than the binging noise?
With thanks.
