Randomly missing computers and/or resources in a peer-to-peer LAN

I have read several posts here that sounded similiar to my problem, but none
of the responses seemed to apply or help. I apologize if I am wasting peoples
time by repeating stuff that is old hat.

I have a simple four computer peer-to-peer LAN. All machines are running
Windows XP Pro with SP2 installed. My IP is Comcast and I have a dependable
6Mbps service. All machines have excellent internet bandwidth. The LAN is a
powerline net with three of the computers connecting to it through a LinkSys
PLEBR10 ethernet bridge. The fourth computer is connected to a D-Link DI-604
router with an ethernet cable, and the router in turn is connected to the LAN
through a LinkSys PLEBR10. I can ping any computer from any other computer by
either name or IP, so names are being resolved OK. Two of the computers have
printers attached to them (one an HP7350 inkjet and the other an old HP
Laserjet series II) that are to be shared by all of the computers. Each
computer is set for simple file sharing and has only two shared folders;
SharedDocs and Downloads.

To summarize, the LAN is to allow all four machines to share broadband
internet access (which it does beautifully), to share files between any pair
of machines and to allow any machine to use either of the printers. I can do
all of these things, but not always in the way I should be able to.

If I click on My Network Places I normally see four groupings -- labeled by
the computer names ("This computer" for the one the page is showing on) with
the two shared folders for each machine. If I then click on View Workgroup
Computers all four computers normally appear with an icon which if clicked
shows the shared resources (folders, Printer, Printers and FAXs etc.) for
that machine. Thats how I would expect it to work and how it does work --
sometimes.

Randomly, and fairly frequently, one or more of the computer groupings will
fail to appear in My Network Places on one or more of the machines. Less
often one of the shared folders on a machine will not appear even though the
machine it is on does -- in MY Network Places. Even more often one or two of
the computers will not show in View Workgroup Computers -- although they are
present if I do net search from cmd.

I have read extensively both here and on net about this problem with most
comments suggesting it is a browser problem -- which apparently can't ever be
fixed. I guess I can't believe that, although several weeks of trying is
about to make me a believer.

Hope this is enough to allow someone to see what is causing the problem.

The fastest way to fix a master browser problem is to designate one computer
that is either on all the time, or is started up before the others, to be
the master browser.

Of course, especially on a network this small, the other way to fix it is
not to use it. If you can always connect to a PC by a known name or share,
then put a shortcut in your network places folder and forget about browsing.
