Editing pictures with an external image editor in FP2003.

I've configured Photoshop as the default editor for image file
extensions(jpg's, gif's etc...) but the "EDIT" button in the Picture
Properties window is never highlighted so I can't use it. I had no problem
doing this with FP2000 but am unable to do it with FP2003. Can anyone tell me
how to enable this feature?

It is 'best practices' to prepare your photos with your image editor before
importing them into your site. Do not do anything to a photo with FP, crop
resize etc. don't do anything!

I wasn't referring to editing a picture within FP. The function I'm referring
to takes the picture out of FP for editing. I find this function necessary
and very helpful when using templates. Used it in FP2000 all the time.

I appreciate the effort Eleanor but your reply just doesn't apply to my
issue. The funtion I am trying to use is simply a shortcut that opens the
external image aditor and places the selected image in it for editing. This
is no different than what you are suggesting but it saves a bunch of steps.
If this is a feature of FP (as I know it is) then it should work properly as
it was intended to. In my case it doesn't work and I need to figure out why.
Pertinent replies only please!
Thank you!

Hi,

A couple ways to do it..if you are in Design View..right click on the image
and choose "open with"

Another way is to double click on the image file name itself under folder
view..that should then open it directly in Photoshop for you.

Hi Joe, if I right click in design view there is no "open with" listed in the
menu however, what happened next might help u to help me:
The "Folder" in the View pull-down menu wasn't highlighted so I used the
"Open" function and pointed to the images folder of the site's folder(on my
desktop) I'm working with. When the window populated with the image files a
message appeared that said the folder needed to be modified to be used (or
something like that) so I let it and then not only was the Folder view
available but the edit button in picture properties was now highlighted and
functional(Yipee!). The only problem is, after closing it all down and
reopening FP I haven't been able to duplicate what I did to make it
work...Frustrating!
Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve,

Guessing now...but it almost sounds like Photoshop wasn't somehow setup as
the default editor? Can you try repeating the steps in FrontPage to set
that? Also is there any chance that you have a page open outside of a web?
If you did that..many functions will not be available. Please check those
two things and see if either helps.

UPDATE: OK, I've realized that if I use "open Site" instead of "Open" I can
then get to the folder list (even though the site is not published on the web
yet). If I leave the folder list open in the background of FP and then return
to the page I am working on the Edit button is functional while in
Page/Design view. This is definitely not how it worked in FP2000 though. Any
thoughts??

Hi again Joe,
Photoshop was set-up as the default editor. Please see my extra post (10:48
AM) that starts: "Update"

Hi Steve,

I think you answered your own question..you definitely need a site open..and
then a page open from inside the site for it to work...so doing a File |
Open Site needs to be your first step!

Thanks Joe,
I know I've used that same feature in FP2000 many times by just opening the
page I wanted to work on without having to open the site first. Not sure why
it's different in FP2003 but I guess like anything else that is Microsoft it
doesn't always seem to make any sense... =)

Sorry you deem it impertinent while I deem it 'best practices'. I'll
disregard your questions from now on.

Eleanor:

It's not going to make any difference at all, if the link into PS is one
passed from FP or one that is triggered by File > Open in PS - just the same
as it doens't hurt to roundtrip images from DW to FW and back. These kinds
of edits are being made within the image editor, not the app that passes the
link.

What you don't want to do is to actually change the image from within the FP
app.

I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings Eleanor (I certainly didn't intend to) but
the bottom line is that you didn't answer the question I asked.
To analogize:
If I asked "Why did the chicken cross the road?" your reply equates to "The
chicken should look both ways before crossing"

Again, it's not bad advice, it just doesn't address the question asked. As
far as disregarding my questions... it seems you did so the first time anyway.

FYI: When you open a double click or otherwise edit a image from within FP in a external
image/graphic application, your are working on a temporary copy of the image in the FP temp folder,
not the actual image. Once you have made your changes, etc. and save, and then closed the external
application, the image file should then be save back to the temp folder, and then FP should then
update the actual image file in the web.

Yes, I am aware of that. After editing the picture I just make sure to "Save
As" and overwrite the original filename and location. Thanks

No
- you shouldn't be using Save As in the external editor opened from FP
You should be using Save & close that editor so FP will Import the edited version from the FP Temp folder back into the web and
recognize the change image
- using save as corrupts the FP Temp files and meta data

I personally feel more secure using 'round trip' with DW and FW than not
completing an image outside FP and then importing back into FP.
Your last sentence was certainly true!!

Well, I have read all this thread and I can see both points of view
1) Eleanor's: that it is safer to do all image editing outside FP
(especially when I read the stuff about using temp folders)
2) cqsteve's: that it is nice to just open the file for editing without
leaving FP.

But Windows surely gives you the best of both worlds.
That is, you can:
Edit the image file in its editor and save it. Open FP and do what you want
with the image. If you need to return to the editor it is still an open
program, isn't it?

Am I to naive?
