Editing MPEG-2 Video with Movie Maker 2

I am capturing video using an ATI All-In-Wonder 8500DV in MPEG-2 format. If
I attempt to use Movie Maker 2 to edit the .mp2 files, I get the message
"...<filename>.mp2 cannot be imported because the codec required to play the
file is not installed on your computer...

The .mp2 files play back without any problems on the computer using Media
Player 9 or the ATI File Player.

I suspect that the problem is actually due to the MPEG-2 play back on the
ATI card being partially supported by hardware decoding. I know that I
might be able to get around this problem by using 3rd party software such as
from Eleard, but I am reluctant to do so since I suspect that it may
intefere with my ATI setup and/or reduce playback/encoding performance.

Wondering if anyone might have some further info in this regard.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dr. J.

I've been doing a little more research on this issue and it appears that
Movie Maker 2 is not the solution for editing MPEG-2 videos. I suspect that
changning your encoding method on the ATI recorder from MPEG-2 to MPEG-1
might allow you to import into Movie Maker 2, but I'm looking for a solution
to match up with my ATI setup as opposed to changing my ATI setup to match
up with Movie Maker 2, so I've been investigating some other alternatives;
since this is a Movie Maker 2 newsgroup, I won't post about other products
here, but I just wanted to follow up and mention that Movie Maker 2 while a
neat program is definitely not the solution for MPEG-2 files.

Cary,

Thanks for the follow-up note.... I added your comments to the Analog Video
Capture > ATI page of my site for others who might follow.

My personal approach with MPEG2 files and Movie Maker 2 is to convert them
into DV-AVI or high quality WMV files and use the new source files in movie
projects.... and I use MM1 and MM2 to do the conversions.
