DVDRW.CDRW recognised as ROM not RW

I did a clean install of Vista Home Premium 64 and my 2 optical drives are
recognised and work when I use CDs or DVDs in them, but when I insert a blank
disc, or when I try to write to a disc, it asks me to connect a burner/disc
must be formatted.
It seems to be recognising my optical drives as read only drives.

Im running a Q6600 and ASUS P5K Deluxe with Pioneer DVR108 and Sony CRX175A1
burners.

How can this be remedied?

Rick,

I upgraded the Pioneer DVR108 to firmware 1.20, the latest available, and
this made no difference.

I'm taking a wild guess and thinking I should just get new drives?

Too bad I can't justify the AUD$1200 for a Blu-Ray drive... :(

Hi,

Then I suspect it's in how your drives are being seen by the system. Have
you tried removing and rebuilding the upper and lowerfilters in the registry
yet? These can be corrupted by third party drivers and cause all sorts of
recognition issues.
