i dont use dvd/cd drive much, but it only seems to work
on some dvds, cds play ok, sometimes recording data can
play up. is it down to the quality of disk itself. i have
power dvd that came with system, as i said some disks
just keep spining and are not recognised.

try the following

1 - Try upgrading your DVD player drivers.

2 - See if the PowerDVD version you have is up to date.

Some DVD's are encoded differently, you may need new
files from various upgrades.

How old is your machine and player. Some older players
even the ones for home theatres are not compatable with
some current DVD formats
