DVD Writer software?

I have just installed a DVD writer in my PC for the first time. It came as
an OEM with no instructions or drivers. I simply replaced my CD Writer with
the new DVD writer and rebooted. It works fine as a DVD player, but how do
i get it to work as a DVD writer? Do I need some software, or should
Windows XP allow me to write to DVDs?

If it did not come with any dvd-burning software
you will probably have to buy some.

Nero has some you can download and try first before buying

Thanks for replies. I had made the simple assumption (wrong) that xp would
give me some basic dvd writing finctionality (as it does for cds). I have
loaded the free deepburner, which will allow me to the basic back up of
files that I was looking for. That gives me time to research the wider
issues.

I was surprised by that as well. I recently upgraded my dad's pc from a
CD writer, to a DVD writer. I was hoping that the would be able to
continue with his usual practice of backing up his 1Gb memory cards
(from his camera,) with the simplification that he would never have to
use two discs. Unfortunately that's not the case because, as you've
found, Windows XP does not know how to write to DVDs as it does CDs.
Moreover, there is apparently no system extension that would permit that
feature.

I used BurnQuick previously, and appreciated its austere approach to
burning discs. I haven't used it since I bought Nero about a year ago,
but it might be worth your inspection.

CDBurnerXP Pro3 is free and quite good also. I used it for a while when my
Nero install went on the fritz.
