I had the same problem, than I installed a different software that I borrowed
from a friend which for whatever reason enabled my Wndows media player. It
seems to work okay now. Try that, maybe it will work.

I am having the same problem. It started after I installed Nero 7.
I did a Google search and found the following site which discusses this
problem:
http://bbs.maniatv.com/bbs/view_topic.php?id=679&forum_id=18&page=1
Following some of the discussions there I went to:
WMP10 Tools>Options>DVD>Advanced
and found a reference to Nero Audio Decoder Filter Version: 1.0.4.60
It seems Nero obliterates the WMP DVD sound decoder and substitutes there own.
I tried reinstalling WMP10 but the Nero decoder persisted.
I don't know if you have the same problem, but I haven't been able to fix
the Nero decoder bug by downloading Nero updates as they suggested.

I had this problem.WMP10 does not have it's own built in decoder. It uses
POWER DVD or simalar players for it's decoder. If you updated to WMP10 then
your existing decoder probably isn't compatible.I suggest you download
"Microsoft Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...AC-0AB6-4990-943D-627E6ADE9FCB&displaylang=en and use it to check and
see if your decoder is compatible with WMP10.When you run the checkup utility
it will display the name of your decoder, click on the name of the decoder and
it will tell you if it is compatible with WMP10. If it's not compatible it
has a box to click and check for an update. If your computer is using Power
DVD as the decoder (as mine is) then clicking check for an update will send
you to Cyberlink to get a compatible version of Power DVD which is Power DVD
SE or any version after it.This worked for me.The price was $14.95.Microsoft
Windows doesn't even offer a decoder. If you check their site for a decoder
they send you to Cyberlink.

Assuming you are not using FFDSHOW, then if you are able to see the
video from a DVD, then you must have a DVD decoder already. This would
normally be installed as part of DVD viewing software such as PowerDVD
or WinDVD. If the audio is not playing, then something has trampled on
the audio filter (have you installed some CODEC pack?). The easiest
solution should be to reinstall whichever DVD viewing software you use,
as that should reinstall and re-register the appropriate filters.

It is probably a DTS license issue.
Software houses are relunctant to pay the exhorbitant fee's to DTS.
So software will not decode DTS soundtracks.
If you have a standalone AV amp, if it shows somewhere on it's facia
that it has the "DTS" logo, then it will decode the soundtrack if you
connect from the optical output on your soundcard to an optical input
on the AV amp.
You of course could download and install the relevent DTS decoder
so as to enable plyaback of such DTS soundtracks, but it won't be free.
But You may already have software installed that includes such DTS
decoding: Roxio 8/9 comes included with a media player licensed for
DTS, or The full version of PowerDVD.
