Editing Win XP Media Center 2005 recordings

Hi - I would like to know how to edit recordings I made off TV in Win Media
Center 2005. What would you recommend as a video editor and file type
converter so they can be played in a regular DVD player for TV?

For editing I tried movie maker, wasn't that bad for basic movie making :)

And adobe premiere pro cs5, you can download it for free , it will last 30 days until ask you for a key.
I made homeworks with both for the uni and worked quite well
