Dvd drive switches to cd drive when trying to burn

When i insert a dvd in my dvd burner it converts to cd drive(e) and i cannot
burn anything or play anything. I will then put a cd in the dvd burner and
it does the opposite, turns back to dvd drive (e).
My burner is a LG dvd ram RW 4x
I am running Microsoft XP
Using Nero 6 to burn

Somebody please help. Thanks
